Childhood Trauma

From the street it looked like a normal house.

For adults raised in homes that looked fine and did not feel safe. Emotional neglect and the skills you built to survive it are usually the material, not one dramatic event.

Overview

Often the neglect was never anything anyone would have reported.

Nothing happened that you could name in a sentence. There was no single night that explains it. There was a house where the temperature changed without warning and you learned to read it before anyone spoke. You became the one who noticed, the one who smoothed, the one who did not add to the load. Somewhere around eight you stopped being a person with needs and became a person with a function.

That skill did not stay in childhood. It became your career: reading rooms, anticipating what people want, being useful before you are asked. People rely on you and you resent it slightly and you cannot say so, because the whole architecture rests on you not needing anything. My parents divorced when I was young, and that is a real part of why I do this work rather than something I read about. Adults who were parentified rarely present saying they have trauma. They present saying they are tired.

Does This Sound Familiar?

The specifics, not a symptom list

Open any line to see how I would think about it with you.

  • You can read a room in four seconds and it is exhausting.Open

That is a survival skill running on an unnecessary loop. It is genuinely valuable and it is also involuntary, which is the problem. We work on getting the volume dial back, not on removing the ability.

  • You do not know what you want, only what would be easiest for everyone.Open

When your preferences were consistently the least important variable, you stop generating them. This is recoverable and it is slower than people expect, because we are building something rather than removing it.

  • You were the one who kept things calm.Open

The parentified child grows into an adult who cannot tolerate other people's distress without managing it. We look at where that responsibility actually ends, in specific relationships, with specific words.

  • Kindness makes you uncomfortable.Open

If care came with conditions, unconditional care reads as a debt being accrued. That reaction is information about what you learned, not about the person offering it.

  • You minimize it, even to yourself, mid-sentence.Open

The reflex to say it was not that bad is often the clearest sign that it was. Minimizing was necessary once, because a child cannot afford to fully register that the adults are not protecting them.

The Work

Working with what did not happen

Name the absence

Emotional neglect is hard to work with because it is defined by what was missing rather than what occurred. We build a specific account of what you needed and did not get, which is often the first time it has been said out loud.

Attachment repair in the present

The pattern lives in your current relationships, so that is where it gets worked. How you ask, whether you ask, what you do when someone gets close. The therapeutic relationship itself is part of this and I will name it when it comes up.

EMDR on the moments that carry it

Even without one big event, there are usually specific memories that hold the belief. The hallway. The birthday. The conversation you were not supposed to hear. Those process well and the belief tends to shift with them.

The Arc

A shape, not a protocol

Everyone moves differently. This is how this particular work usually unfolds here.

  1. Much of the first stretch is undoing the minimizing, gently. Not to build a case against your family, but so we can work with what actually happened rather than the compressed version.

Questions

Answered plainly

Anything not covered here is worth asking on the free 15-minute consult.

Does this mean I have to blame my parents?

No, and most clients do not want to. Understanding the effect of how you were raised is not the same as issuing a verdict on the people who raised you. Both things can be true and holding both is usually where the relief is.

What is emotional neglect exactly?

It is the consistent absence of emotional responsiveness: your feelings were not noticed, named, or responded to. It leaves people competent and disconnected from themselves, and because nothing overtly bad happened it is frequently missed for decades.

I have already done a lot of therapy about my childhood. Why would this be different?

Insight and felt change are stored differently. If you can explain the pattern precisely and still live inside it, the missing piece is often processing rather than more understanding, which is where EMDR and parts work come in.

Will this make my current relationships harder for a while?

Sometimes, temporarily, because starting to have needs changes agreements other people were comfortable with. We plan for that rather than being surprised by it, and we go at a pace you can sustain.

Do you work with adults only?

Yes. My practice is adults and couples. This page is about people in their twenties through sixties looking back at how they were raised.
