Life Transitions
You got the thing you were working toward, and now you are not sure who you are.
Promotions, moves, new babies, and careers you built and no longer want. Values-based work for the periods when the map you were using stops matching the terrain.

Overview
The map stopped matching the terrain.
Transitions are strange because the good ones destabilize you just as much as the bad ones. The promotion arrives and with it a role you have never done, a peer group you no longer belong to, and a quiet worry that the thing you were good at is not the thing you are now paid for. The baby arrives and the love is enormous and so is the grief for a self who could leave the house without planning. Nobody has a script for being unsettled by something they wanted.
San Diego has its own version of this. People move here for biotech, for the Navy, for a fresh start after something ended somewhere colder. The weather is exactly as advertised and the loneliness catches them completely off guard, because it is difficult to say I am struggling when you live somewhere people vacation. Two years in, a lot of them still have no one to call on a Tuesday.

You moved here and the ocean has not fixed it.Open
Relocation resets your entire support structure at once, and adult friendship is slow. Feeling isolated somewhere beautiful adds a layer of guilt on top of the loneliness. Both are worth working with directly.
You got the promotion and now you feel like a fraud.Open
A step up usually means leaving the work you were confident in for work you have never done. That is a competence gap, not a character flaw, and it is at its worst in the first six months.
You built the career and you do not want it anymore.Open
Sunk cost makes this one of the hardest conversations people have with themselves. We separate what you actually value now from what past you committed to, and take the decision seriously rather than dismissing it as a phase.
You are a new parent, and you miss a person you used to be.Open
Loving your child and grieving your former life are not in conflict. Saying that out loud once, to someone who does not flinch, tends to matter more than the rest of the session.
Everything is technically fine and you feel unmoored.Open
Transitions dismantle the routines that carry identity without anyone noticing they were doing that job. The disorientation is the structure being rebuilt, and it is temporary, though it does not feel it.
The Work
Values-based decision work
Name what you actually value now
Not what you valued at twenty-eight when you set this course. We do this concretely, using how you spend your time and money rather than a list of nice words, because the two often disagree.
Test decisions against it
With values written down, most stuck decisions become clearer, though not necessarily easier. We look at the options in front of you and where each one sits relative to what you have said matters.
Grieve what the change costs
Every transition has a loss inside it, even the celebrated ones. Skipping that part is why people arrive at the thing they wanted and feel nothing. We name what is being left behind properly.
The Arc
A shape, not a protocol
Everyone moves differently. This is how this particular work usually unfolds here.
Often the stated transition is not the live one. The job change is the occasion, and something about identity or a relationship is the material. We find that out first.
Questions
Answered plainly
Anything not covered here is worth asking on the free 15-minute consult.
Is this therapy or is it coaching?
It is therapy. Coaching is generally forward-facing and goal-driven, and it does not address what a change is stirring up from earlier in your life. I work with both layers, and I am a licensed clinician in California.
I do not have a diagnosis. Is that a problem?
Not at all. A great deal of good therapy happens with people who are managing a hard period rather than a condition. If you are paying privately, no diagnosis is required for us to work together.
How long do people usually come for with a transition?
Shorter than most other work, often a few months, because there is a defined situation. Some people finish and return years later for the next one. I do not put a number on it in advance.
I moved here for work and have no community. Can therapy really help with that?
It can help with what is in the way: the social anxiety, the exhaustion, the belief that reaching out is imposing. It is not a substitute for actual friendships, and we will work on the practical side of building them too.
Can we meet by video? My schedule is unpredictable.
Yes. Telehealth is available Monday through Friday anywhere in California, which is often the deciding factor for people in demanding roles or with new babies at home.
